Early Life

Sir Kenneth Charles Branagh was born on December 10, 1960, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to working-class Protestant parents, Frances and William Branagh. His father, a plumber and joiner, ran a company specializing in fitting partitions and suspended ceilings. Branagh is the middle child of three, and his family moved to England in the early 1970s to escape the Troubles, settling in Reading, Berkshire. He attended several schools, where he developed a passion for acting, participating in school productions and honing his craft at the amateur Reading Cine & Video Society. After disappointing A-level results, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, where he was recognized for his talent early on.

Career

Branagh's career took off in the early 1980s, with his first film appearance in "Chariots of Fire" (1981) and significant acclaim for his role in the BBC's "Billy Plays" (1982-84). He became a prominent figure in British theatre, winning the SWET Award for Best Newcomer in 1982. Branagh was married to actress Emma Thompson from 1989 to 1995, with whom he collaborated on several projects. He later married film art director Lindsay Brunnock in 2003. Despite his success, Branagh identifies strongly with his Irish roots, stating, "I feel Irish. I don't think you can take Belfast out of the boy."
