Biography

Early Life

Kim Petras was born on August 27, 1992, in Uckerath, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Growing up with two older sisters, she began identifying as female at the tender age of two and started hormone therapy at twelve. Inspired by a songwriting documentary, she began writing songs during her early teens, teaching herself English through YouTube videos of artists like Britney Spears. Her journey into the public eye began when she discussed her medical gender transition on Stern TV at age 13, making headlines as the "world's youngest transsexual" after undergoing gender-affirming surgery at 16.

Career Beginnings

While still in school, Petras pursued her passion for music by visiting recording studios and recording demos, which led to her signing with Universal Music Germany. In May 2011, she released her debut EP, "One Piece of Tape." At 19, she moved to Los Angeles, living in a producer's garage while continuing to write and develop her music. Her breakthrough came in 2017 with the release of her debut single "I Don't Want It at All," which charted on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. This was followed by her second EP, "Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1," and several successful singles, including collaborations with artists like Kygo.

Artistic Development

Petras's music is characterized by a genre-agnostic style, often incorporating pop elements with a unique twist. She has cited influences from pop icons such as Cher, Madonna, and Britney Spears. Her fanbase, affectionately known as "Bunheads," reflects her playful and vibrant public persona. Throughout her career, she has worked with notable producers, including Dr. Luke, and has faced both praise and criticism for her collaborations and public statements regarding the music industry. Despite controversies, she continues to evolve as an artist, releasing new music and maintaining a strong presence in pop culture.
