Early Life

Dom John IV, known as John the Restorer, was born in Vila Viçosa and became the Duke of Braganza after the death of his father, Teodósio II, in 1630. He married Luisa de Guzmán in 1633, further solidifying his noble lineage. Described as having blonde hair and an average height, John IV was not only a nobleman but also a significant figure in Portuguese history.

Reign and Musical Contributions

John IV ascended to the throne as King of Portugal in 1640, a pivotal year when he restored Portugal's independence from Habsburg Spanish rule, ending a 60-year union. His reign lasted until his death in 1656, during which he became a notable patron of music and the arts. He was a sophisticated writer on music, composing works and defending the styles of prominent composers like Palestrina. One of his notable compositions, a setting of the "Crux fidelis," remains popular among church choirs, although it was first published in 1869, long after his death.

Legacy

John IV's legacy extends beyond his musical contributions; he was also a cultural figure who amassed one of the largest libraries of his time, tragically lost in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. His daughter, Catherine of Braganza, married King Charles II of England, further intertwining Portuguese and English royal histories. His proclamation of Mary as the Patroness of Portugal in 1646 reflects his deep religious convictions and the cultural significance of his reign.
