Krist Novoselic

Early Life

Krist Anthony Novoselic was born on May 16, 1965, in Compton, California, to Croatian immigrants Kristo Novaselić and Marija Mustać. After a year in Compton, his family moved to the Croatian neighborhood of San Pedro in Los Angeles. Novoselic's early exposure to music came from listening to Chuck Berry with his father, and he developed a diverse taste, influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and punk rock groups such as the Sex Pistols. His family relocated to Aberdeen, Washington, in 1979, where he continued to cultivate his musical interests.

Career

Novoselic co-founded the iconic rock band Nirvana, where he played bass on every album. The band's journey began with a series of short-lived projects before they recorded their debut album, "Bleach," in 1989. After several lineup changes, including the addition of drummer Dave Grohl, Nirvana achieved massive success in the early 1990s, becoming a defining force in the grunge movement. Novoselic contributed creatively to the band's music, helping to shape their sound and lyrical direction.

Political and Social Activism

Beyond music, Novoselic has been an active political figure, advocating for various causes, including music rights and electoral reform. He played a significant role in opposing the Erotic Music Law in Washington State and founded the Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee (JAMPAC) to address issues affecting artists. His political engagement reflects his commitment to social issues and the music community.

Personal Life

Novoselic's personal life includes two marriages, first to Shelli Hyrkas and later to artist Darbury Ayn Stenderu. He resides on a farm in Washington, where he enjoys a quiet life, growing his own food and pursuing interests in aviation and nature. An FAA-licensed pilot, Novoselic has also earned a BSc in social sciences from Washington State University, showcasing his dedication to education and personal growth.
