Early Life

Laura Phillips "Laurie" Anderson was born on June 5, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the suburb of Glen Ellyn as one of eight children. She developed an early interest in the arts, studying painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and playing with the Chicago Youth Symphony. After graduating from Glenbard West High School, she attended Mills College in California and later earned a B.A. magna cum laude from Barnard College in 1969, followed by an M.F.A. in sculpture from Columbia University in 1972. Her first performance art piece, a symphony played on automobile horns, was performed in 1969.

Career

Anderson emerged as a prominent figure in the New York art scene during the 1970s, known for her innovative performances that often combined music, technology, and visual art. One of her most notable works, "Duets on Ice," featured her playing the violin while ice skating on a stage, with the performance concluding only when the ice melted. She gained commercial success with her single "O Superman," which reached number two on the UK singles chart in 1981. Throughout her career, she has released several acclaimed albums, including "Big Science," "Mister Heartbreak," and "Landfall," the latter of which won a Grammy Award in 2019.

Personal Life

In 1992, Anderson met musician Lou Reed, and they married in April 2008, remaining together until his death in 2013. The destruction of her archives by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 inspired her book "All the Things I Lost in the Flood" and her album "Landfall." A long-time practitioner of Buddhism, Anderson has studied meditation since 1977 and continues to explore themes of impermanence and art in her work.
