Layal Abboud

Early Life

Layal Mounir Abboud, born on May 15, 1982, in the southern Lebanese village of Kanisah, grew up in a large Shiite Muslim family. Her parents, Mounir and Maryam, had a total of nine children, and from a young age, Layal showed a passion for music and dance, inspired by Egyptian pop singer Amr Diab. Encouraged by her father, she began her musical journey with a violin at the age of six. Layal excelled academically, working as a private tutor while pursuing her studies in English literature and translation at Lebanese University and Beirut Arab University, ultimately earning a master's degree. She also studied music at the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music for two years and served as an officer in the Lebanese Police Force.

Musical Career

Layal's musical career took off when she appeared on the popular TV show Studio El-Fan during the 2001-02 season. She performed at various venues in Beirut, connecting with notable musicians and honing her skills. By 2006, she had become a multi-instrumentalist, mastering the oud, organ, and guitar. Her debut album, "Fi Shouq" (On Longing), was released in late 2007, marking her entry into the Arabic pop scene. Layal cites influences from renowned artists like Ammar El Sherei, Baligh Hamdi, and Sabah, and expresses a deep appreciation for French music. In addition to singing, she is a poet and composer, although she focuses primarily on her musical career.

Personal Life and Advocacy

In her personal life, Layal moved to Beirut in 2009 and is known for her commitment to health and fitness. She publicly acknowledged undergoing rhinoplasty in 2017 but attributes her beauty to a healthy lifestyle. A passionate advocate for public health, she supports a smoking ban in Lebanon. Layal is also a devoted mother to her son, Jad, born in 2004, and has experienced the challenges of early marriage and divorce. Despite these challenges, she remains dedicated to her artistic pursuits and philanthropic efforts, describing herself as "abnormally generous." Her home was burglarized in 2018, highlighting the vulnerabilities she faces as a public figure. Layal Abboud continues to be a prominent figure in Lebanese music, celebrated for her contributions and artistic integrity.
