Leo VI, Emperor of the East

Early Life

Leo VI, known as Leo the Wise, was born on September 19, 866, to Empress Eudokia Ingerina. His parentage is somewhat ambiguous; he was either the illegitimate son of Emperor Michael III or the second son of Michael's successor, Basil I the Macedonian. Leo's early life was marked by political intrigue, as he was associated with the throne at a young age and became the direct heir after the death of his older half-brother, Constantine, in 879. His relationship with his father, Basil, was fraught with tension, particularly after Leo's mother passed away, leading to personal strife and accusations of conspiracy against him.

Reign as Emperor

Leo VI ascended to the Byzantine throne in 886 following the death of Basil I. His reign, which lasted until 912, was characterized by a continuation of the cultural renaissance initiated by his predecessor. Leo was well-read and sought to promote learning and the arts, earning him the title of 'the Wise.' However, his rule was also marred by military setbacks against Bulgaria and the Arabs, as well as significant political changes, including the formal discontinuation of ancient Roman institutions like the office of Roman consul.

Family and Legacy

Throughout his life, Leo VI had four wives and several children. His first wife, Theophano Martinakia, bore him a daughter, Eudokia, who died young. His second wife, Zoe Zaoutzaina, gave him another daughter, Anna, who married the Holy Roman Emperor Louis the Blind. Leo's third marriage to Eudokia Baïana resulted in a son, Basil, who tragically lived only a few days. His final wife, Zoe Karbonopsina, had two children with him: Anna and Constantine VII. Leo VI's legacy is marked by his contributions to Byzantine culture and governance, as well as the complex familial relationships that defined his reign.
