Lester Young

Early Life and Career

Lester Willis Young, affectionately known as "Pres" or "Prez", was born on August 27, 1909, in Woodville, Mississippi, into a musically inclined family. His father, Willis Handy Young, was a teacher and band leader, which set the stage for Lester's early exposure to music. By the age of five, he was already working to support his family, selling newspapers and shining shoes. Young's musical journey began with the trumpet, violin, and drums, eventually leading him to the tenor saxophone while living in Minneapolis during the 1920s. He left the family band at 18, refusing to tour in the racially segregated Southern United States, and joined the Bostonians, where he solidified his identity as a tenor saxophonist.

Musical Influence and Legacy

Lester Young's innovative playing style left a profound impact on the jazz genre, influencing a generation of musicians including John Coltrane, Stan Getz, and Charlie Parker, who shaped the bebop movement. His unique sound and approach to music earned him a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and he is remembered for popularizing terms like "cool" and "bread" in the jazz lexicon. Beyond music, Young's influence extended to literary figures such as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, showcasing his cultural significance.

Personal Life

Throughout his life, Young experienced three marriages, with his first to Beatrice Tolliver in 1930. His second marriage was to Mary Dale, followed by Mary Berkeley, with whom he had two children. His son, Lester Young Jr., has made notable strides in education, becoming the first African American chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents in 2021. Young's legacy continues to resonate, both in music and in the lives of those he inspired.
