Early Life

Marie-Juliette Olga Boulanger, known as Lili Boulanger, was born on August 21, 1893, in France. She was the daughter of composer Ernest Boulanger and was raised in a musical family, which included her older sister, Nadia Boulanger, who would also become a renowned composer and teacher. Lili's early exposure to music and composition set the stage for her remarkable career in classical music.

Career

Lili Boulanger's career was marked by her groundbreaking achievements as a composer. She became the first woman to win the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1913, a significant milestone that highlighted her exceptional talent. Her compositions, which include works such as "Du fond de l’abîme" and "Psaume 24," reflect her association with the Symbolist and Impressionist movements. Despite her short life, which ended on March 15, 1918, Boulanger's influence on classical music remains profound, with her works continuing to be performed and celebrated.

Legacy

Lili Boulanger's legacy is preserved through various initiatives aimed at honoring her contributions to music. In 1939, her sister Nadia established the Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund to support emerging composers and to keep Lili's memory alive. Additionally, the Friends of Lili Boulanger Association was founded in 1965, which later became the Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Centre. The Boulanger Initiative, founded in 2018, further promotes music composed by women in her honor. Boulanger's impact is also recognized in popular culture, as evidenced by the asteroid 1181 Lilith being named in her honor.
