Early Life

Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, was born on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of ten, her family moved to Houston, Texas, where she began her musical journey. Classically trained as a flutist for eight years, Lizzo graduated from Alief Elsik High School in 2006, where she also started rapping. By age 14, she formed a musical group called Cornrow Clique, adopting the nickname "Lizzo" inspired by Jay-Z's song "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)." After her father's death at 21, she faced hardships, living out of her car while trying to break into the music industry. In 2011, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to pursue her career further.

Career

Lizzo's career began to take shape in Minneapolis, where she performed with various groups, including the electro soul-pop duo Lizzo & the Larva Ink. She co-founded the all-female rap/R&B group, the Chalice, which released a successful album in 2012. Her debut album, "Lizzobangers," was released in 2013 and received critical acclaim, leading to her recognition as a rising star. Lizzo's subsequent albums, including "Big GRRRL Small World" (2015) and "Cuz I Love You" (2019), solidified her place in the music industry. She has won multiple awards, including Grammy Awards for Best Progressive R&B Album and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Personal Life and Advocacy

Lizzo is known for her advocacy of body positivity and self-confidence, often addressing body shaming in her music and public appearances. She identifies as sexually fluid and has a strong LGBTQ+ following, affectionately referring to her fans as "Lizzbians." Despite facing criticism, she continues to promote a message of self-love and acceptance. Lizzo's artistry blends various genres, including hip-hop, soul, and R&B, and she cites influences such as Missy Elliott and Lauryn Hill.
