James Todd Smith, known professionally as LL Cool J, was born on January 14, 1968, in Bay Shore, New York. Raised in a challenging environment, he experienced significant trauma during his childhood, including witnessing his father shoot his mother and grandfather. After moving to St. Albans, Queens, with his mother, LL Cool J began rapping at the age of 10, inspired by the hip-hop group The Treacherous Three. His grandfather, a jazz saxophonist, supported his musical aspirations by purchasing equipment for him, which helped him develop his craft.

LL Cool J's career took off when he adopted his stage name, which stands for "Ladies Love Cool James," and signed with Def Jam Recordings.
