Early Life

Loreena McKennitt was born on February 17, 1957, in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, to parents Jack McKennitt and Irene Dickey. With Irish and Scottish roots, she grew up in a community rich in musical traditions, particularly influenced by the local Mennonite culture. Initially pursuing a career in veterinary medicine at the University of Manitoba, McKennitt's passion for music blossomed as she discovered folk music and the works of Canadian artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Her journey into Celtic music began after attending the inaugural Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1974, which inspired her to visit Ireland and learn the Celtic harp, leading her to busk in Toronto to fund her first album.

McKennitt's music career took off with the release of her debut album, "Elemental," in 1985, followed by a series of successful albums including "The Visit" and "The Book of Secrets." Her unique blend of Celtic and Middle Eastern influences, characterized by her clear soprano vocals, garnered her international acclaim and over 16 million records sold worldwide. Notably, her single "The Mummers' Dance" became a hit in North America in 1997, further solidifying her place in the music industry.
