Early Life

Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, known professionally as Macklemore, was born on June 19, 1983, in Seattle, Washington. Growing up in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, he was raised in a Catholic family with Irish heritage alongside his brother Tim. Macklemore's introduction to hip-hop came at the age of six, inspired by the group Digital Underground. By 15, he began writing lyrics, influenced by East Coast underground hip-hop artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Nas. He attended Garfield High School, where he formed a hip-hop group called Elevated Elements, and later enrolled at the College of Santa Fe, which he described as pivotal for his development as a rapper.

Career

Macklemore's music career began in 2000 with the release of his mixtape "Open Your Eyes." He dropped the name "Professor" and released his first full-length album, "The Language of My World," in 2005. His collaboration with producer Ryan Lewis began in 2006, leading to the formation of the duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. They achieved international success with hits like "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us," earning multiple awards, including a Grammy for Best New Artist. Macklemore's discography includes several albums and singles, showcasing his versatility across genres such as hip-hop, pop rap, and alternative hip-hop.

Personal Life

Macklemore became engaged to Tricia Davis in 2013, and they welcomed their first child, Sloane, in 2015, shortly after their marriage. The couple later had two more children, further enriching their family life. Macklemore has been open about his struggles with addiction, entering rehabilitation in 2008 and celebrating sobriety, which he often reflects on in his music. His personal experiences and commitment to authenticity resonate deeply in his work, making him a respected figure in the music industry.
