Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold was born on October 21, 1921, in Northampton, England, into a family of shoemakers with a rich musical background. The youngest of five children, he was inspired to take up the trumpet at age 12 after witnessing Louis Armstrong perform. He later won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition and trumpet. Arnold's early career included playing as a second trumpet in the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where he became principal trumpet in 1943.
