maNga

Formation

maNga is a Turkish nu metal band formed in 2001, originating from Turkey. The band's name was inspired by Japanese comics, a concept introduced by guitarist Yağmur Sarıgül. Initially, they played underground music, covering songs from various rock and metal bands. Their breakthrough came after they finished as runners-up in the Sing Your Song music contest, which caught the attention of artist manager Hadi Elazzi. This led to a deal with Sony Music and the release of their self-titled debut album in 2004, which quickly became a hit.

Breakthrough

The band's unique sound blends nu metal and hip hop with traditional Anatolian melodies, a style that resonated with audiences. In 2009, maNga achieved significant recognition by winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best European Act after securing the Best Turkish Act award. They represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with their song "We Could Be the Same," finishing in second place. Their music has been featured in various media, including the FIFA 06 game and the Turkish film Sınav, which helped solidify their popularity.

Legacy

maNga has made a lasting impact on the Turkish music scene, headlining major festivals and collaborating with renowned artists. The current lineup includes Ferman Akgül on lead vocals, Cem Bahtiyar on electric bass guitar, Özgür Can Öney on drums, and Yağmur Sarıgül on electric guitar. Their innovative fusion of genres continues to influence new generations of musicians in Turkey and beyond.
