Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy

Early Life

Margaret of Austria was born on January 10, 1480, in Brussels, the second child and only daughter of Maximilian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy, co-sovereigns of the Low Countries. Her early life was marked by tragedy, as her mother passed away in 1482, leading to her brother Philip the Handsome becoming the sovereign of the Low Countries with their father as regent. Following her mother's death, Margaret was engaged to the Dauphin Charles of France, a political alliance that would shape her future.

Education and Upbringing

After her engagement, Margaret was placed under the guardianship of King Louis XI of France, who intended to prepare her for her role as Queen of France. She was raised in the royal household, receiving a fine education alongside other noble children, including Louise of Savoy, who would later become her sister-in-law. Despite the political nature of her engagement, Margaret developed a genuine affection for Charles, which would influence her life and decisions.

Career and Legacy

Margaret's political career began in earnest when she became the Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1507 to 1515 and again from 1519 until her death in 1530. She was the first of many female regents in the Netherlands, paving the way for future women in power. Her leadership and governance were significant during a time when female rulers were rare, and her legacy continues to be recognized in the history of the region.
