Early Life

Marie Catherine Sophie, Comtesse d'Agoult, was born on December 31, 1805, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, to a French aristocrat and a German merchant's daughter. Her early education took place in a French convent after the Bourbon Restoration, shaping her literary and historical interests. In 1827, she married Charles Louis Constant d'Agoult, Comte d'Agoult, and became the Comtesse d'Agoult. The couple had two daughters, Louise and Claire, but Marie never divorced her husband despite leaving him for the famous composer Franz Liszt.

Relationship with Franz Liszt

From 1835 to 1839, Marie d'Agoult was in a passionate relationship with the renowned pianist and composer Franz Liszt, who was six years her junior. During this time, Liszt dedicated his piece "Die Lorelei" to her, marking a significant moment in their artistic connection. The couple traveled extensively through Italy and Switzerland, visiting cities like Milan, Venice, and Rome, where Marie became integrated into Liszt's artistic circle, which included notable figures such as Frédéric Chopin.

Known by her pen name, Daniel Stern, Marie d'Agoult was a prominent figure in the Romantic literary movement. Her works often reflected her experiences and relationships, particularly her time with Liszt. She was recognized for her contributions to literature and history, receiving the Prix Thérouanne for her achievements.
