Marie Fredriksson

Early Life

Gun-Marie Fredriksson was born on May 30, 1958, in Össjö, Sweden. At the age of four, her family moved to Östra Ljungby, where her father worked as a postman and her mother as a factory worker. Tragically, when Marie was just seven, her oldest sister Anna-Lisa died in a car accident, an event that deeply affected her family and shaped Marie's early life. With both parents working, Marie and her siblings often found themselves alone at home, which led her to explore music. Encouraged by her pastor and inspired by artists like The Beatles and Joni Mitchell, she began singing and playing instruments from a young age.

Career

Fredriksson's musical journey took off after she graduated from music school in 1977. She moved to Halmstad and became involved in the local indie music scene, forming the punk group Strul in 1978. The band gained popularity and even established their own music festival, Strulfestivalen. However, after Strul disbanded in 1981, Marie's career took a significant turn when she teamed up with Per Gessle to form the pop-rock duo Roxette in 1986. The duo achieved international fame with hits like "It Must Have Been Love" and albums such as "Look Sharp!" and "Joyride," which solidified their place in pop music history.

Personal Life

Marie Fredriksson met her husband, Mikael "Micke" Bolyos, during a Roxette tour in 1991. Their relationship provided her with the support she needed to navigate the pressures of fame. They married in a private ceremony in 1994 and had two children together. Despite her success, Marie faced personal challenges, including struggles with epilepsy, which she managed throughout her life. Her dedication to her family and music remained a constant source of strength until her passing in 2019.
