Marin Marais

Early Life

Marin Marais was born on May 31, 1656, in France, and he would go on to become a prominent composer and viol player during the middle Baroque era. His early musical education included studying composition under the renowned Jean-Baptiste Lully and the esteemed viol master Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, with whom he trained for six months. This foundational training set the stage for his illustrious career in music.

Career

Marais's career took off in 1676 when he was appointed as a musician at the royal court of Versailles. His talent was quickly recognized, and by 1679, he held the prestigious title of "ordinaire de la chambre du roy pour la viole," a position he maintained until 1725. He became a master of the viol and is celebrated as the leading French composer for the instrument. Over his lifetime, he produced five books of "Pièces de viole" between 1686 and 1725, which were suites featuring a basso continuo and became immensely popular at court. His compositions, such as "Le Labyrinthe" and "La Gamme," showcased his innovative approach to music, with the latter piece illustrating a seamless ascent and descent through the musical scale.

Personal Life

On September 21, 1676, Marin Marais married Catherine d'Amicourt in Paris. The couple had a remarkable family, welcoming nineteen children into their lives. Despite his professional success, little is known about Marais's personal life beyond his marriage and family, as he maintained a relatively private existence after reaching adulthood.
