Career

Mariza's career took off in the early 2000s, particularly after the death of the legendary fado singer Amália Rodrigues in 1999. This event sparked a resurgence of interest in fado, and Mariza was invited to perform a tribute to Rodrigues, which led to her recording her debut album, "Fado em Mim," in 2001. The album was a commercial success, selling over 140,000 copies worldwide, a remarkable feat for a fado record. Following this, her second album, "Fado Curvo," released in 2003, solidified her status as a leading figure in the New Fado movement. Mariza's powerful voice and unique interpretations of fado standards garnered her international acclaim, including the BBC Radio 3 award for Best European Artist in World Music in 2003.

Martim was born two months premature and later diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
