Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Mary Elizabeth Blodwen Hopkin was born into a Welsh-speaking family in Pontardawe, Wales. From a young age, she took weekly singing lessons and began her musical journey as a folk singer with a local group called the Selby Set and Mary. Her early career included releasing an EP of Welsh-language songs for a local record label, Cambrian, before she caught the attention of the music industry. After winning the ITV talent show Opportunity Knocks, she was recommended to Paul McCartney by the model Twiggy, leading to her signing with Apple Records, one of the first artists to do so.

Breakthrough and Success

Hopkin's debut single, "Those Were the Days," produced by McCartney, was released on August 30, 1968. The song quickly became a sensation, reaching number one on the UK singles chart and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it was held from the top spot by the Beatles' "Hey Jude." The single sold over 1.5 million copies in the US alone and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA, with global sales exceeding 8 million. Her performance of the song earned her a nomination for the "Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Performance, Female" at the 11th Annual Grammy Awards in 1969.
