Early Life

Mason Durell Betha, known professionally as Mase, was born on August 27, 1975, in Jacksonville, Florida, as a fraternal twin. He grew up in a large family with two brothers and three sisters, including his twin sister, Stason. After their father left when Mase was three, his mother moved the family to Harlem, New York, where Mase spent most of his childhood. During his teenage years, he faced challenges and was sent back to Jacksonville to live with relatives. It was there that he began attending church, which would later influence his music. Upon returning to Harlem at 15, Mase excelled in basketball but ultimately shifted his focus to music after realizing his academic struggles would hinder his NBA aspirations.

Mase's music career began in earnest after he returned to Harlem, where he and his friend Cam'ron formed a group called Children of the Corn. In 1996, he caught the attention of Sean Combs and signed with Bad Boy Records for $250,000. He quickly gained fame as Combs's hype man and featured on hits like "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" and "Mo Money Mo Problems." His debut album, "Harlem World," released in 1997, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and was certified quadruple platinum, solidifying his status in hip-hop. Mase continued to release successful albums, including "Double Up" and "Welcome Back," and became known for his melodic rap style.
