Formation

Massive Attack, a pioneering British trip hop collective, was formed in 1988 in Bristol, England, by Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, and Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles. The group emerged from the Wild Bunch, a local sound system collective that dominated the Bristol club scene in the mid-1980s. Their debut single, "Any Love," was released shortly after their formation, showcasing their unique blend of hip hop, soul, and reggae influences.

Breakthrough

The band's first album, "Blue Lines," released in 1991, is often credited as the first trip hop album, featuring the iconic track "Unfinished Sympathy." This album, co-produced with Neneh Cherry, helped define their sound characterized by atmospheric dynamics and innovative sampling techniques.
