Early Life

Maurizio Pollini was born on January 5, 1942, in Milan, Italy, into a musically inclined family. His father, Gino Pollini, was an amateur violinist and a pioneering architect, while his mother, Renata Melotti, was trained as a pianist and singer. Pollini began his piano studies at the age of seven under the guidance of Carlo Lonati, who encouraged him to explore his musical interests. After Lonati's passing, he continued his education with Carlo Vidusso at the Milan Conservatory, where he also studied composition and conducting.

Career

Pollini made his performance debut at just 15 years old, showcasing a selection of Chopin's Etudes. His competitive spirit shone through when he won the prestigious International Chopin Piano Competition in 1960, becoming the youngest and first non-Slav to achieve this honor. Throughout his career, Pollini became renowned for his interpretations of classical composers such as Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as for championing contemporary works by composers like Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He was also instrumental in reviving Rossini's operas, conducting significant performances at the Rossini Opera Festival.

Personal Life

In 1968, Pollini married Maria Elisabetta Marzotto, a fellow pianist. The couple had a son, Daniele Pollini, who followed in his father's footsteps as a pianist and conductor. Maurizio Pollini passed away on March 23, 2024, at the age of 82, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of classical music.

Legacy

Pollini's contributions to music were recognized with numerous awards, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and a Grammy Award for his recording of Chopin's Nocturnes. His recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations won the Diapason d'Or, and he was inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame in 2012. Pollini's influence on both classical and contemporary music continues to resonate, marking him as a significant figure in the music world.
