Early Life

Merle Ronald Haggard was born on April 6, 1937, in Oildale, California, to Flossie Mae and James Francis Haggard. His family moved to California after their farm in Oklahoma burned down. After the death of his father in 1946, young Merle faced a turbulent childhood, which included trouble with the law and time spent in juvenile detention. Despite these challenges, he developed a passion for music, learning to play guitar at the age of 12, influenced by artists like Bob Wills and Hank Williams.

Career

Haggard's music career took off after his release from San Quentin prison in 1960. He began performing and recording, eventually becoming a key figure in the Bakersfield sound, a raw and authentic style of country music. His breakthrough came with the hit "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers" in 1965, leading to a string of successful albums, including "Mama Tried" and "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive." Over his five-decade career, Haggard achieved 38 number-one hits on the US country charts and became known for his poignant songwriting and distinctive voice.

Haggard was married five times and had six children. His second wife, Bonnie Owens, played a significant role in his career, helping him achieve success in the country music scene.
