Formation

MGMT, an American rock band, was formed in December 2002 in Middletown, Connecticut, by Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser while they were students at Wesleyan University. Initially known as The Management, the duo released two demo albums before changing their name to MGMT in 2005 due to a naming conflict. Their early sound was characterized by a blend of noise rock and electronica, which evolved into a unique style of psychedelic pop. After graduating in 2005, they began to gain traction, touring extensively and releasing their debut EP, "Time to Pretend," that same year.

Breakthrough

In 2006, MGMT signed with Columbia Records, marking a significant turning point in their career. They recorded their major label debut, "Oracular Spectacular," in 2007 with producer Dave Fridmann. The album featured hit singles like "Electric Feel" and "Kids," which propelled them into the mainstream and established their reputation as innovators in the indie pop and psychedelic rock scenes. Their follow-up albums, including "Congratulations" (2010) and "Little Dark Age" (2018), showcased their evolving sound and artistic growth, further solidifying their place in modern music.
