Early Life

Michelle Jacquet Branch was born on July 2, 1983, in Sedona, Arizona, to Peggy and David Branch. She has a rich cultural heritage, being of Dutch-Indonesian and French descent through her mother, and Irish descent through her father. Her maternal grandmother, who was of Indonesian origin, endured a Japanese internment camp during World War II before moving to Holland and eventually to the United States. Branch began singing at the tender age of three and took voice lessons at Northern Arizona University starting at eight. By fourteen, she received her first guitar and quickly began composing her own music, with her first song, "Fallen," written shortly after.

Career

Branch's music career took off when her parents supported her by booking local gigs and financing her independent album, "Broken Bracelet," released in 2000. The album showcased her early songwriting and was inspired by a bracelet given to her by musician Steve Poltz. In 2001, she signed with Maverick Records, leading to the release of her breakthrough album, "The Spirit Room," which featured the hit single "Everywhere." This song won the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards Viewer's Choice Award and was followed by other successful singles like "All You Wanted" and "Goodbye to You." Branch's musical style has been influenced by a variety of artists, including The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, and Fleetwood Mac, and she is known for her distinctive soprano voice.

Personal Life

Branch's personal life has seen its share of ups and downs. She married her bass player, Teddy Landau, in 2004, and they welcomed a child in 2005. However, the couple separated in 2014, and their divorce was finalized in 2015. In 2015, she began dating Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, and they married in 2019, having two children together. Branch faced personal challenges, including a miscarriage in 2020 and a public separation from Carney in 2022, which included legal issues. Despite these challenges, she continues to be a prominent figure in the music industry, known for her resilience and artistic contributions.
