Mira Sorvino

Early Life

Mira Katherine Sorvino was born on September 28, 1967, in Manhattan, New York City, to Lorraine Ruth Davis, a drama therapist, and Paul Sorvino, an actor and film director. Growing up in Tenafly, New Jersey, she was influenced by her mother’s commitment to social causes and began writing and acting in backyard plays with her childhood friend, Hope Davis. Sorvino excelled academically and was accepted into Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude in 1989 with a degree in East Asian studies. During her time at Harvard, she co-founded the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones, a co-ed a cappella group.

Career

Sorvino's acting career began with a role in the teen television series "Swans Crossing". Her breakthrough came with the 1995 film "Mighty Aphrodite", directed by Woody Allen, where her portrayal of a prostitute earned her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Despite the acclaim, she described the filming process as extremely stressful. Following this success, she starred in various films, including "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" and "Mimic", and portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the HBO film "Norma Jean & Marilyn".

Personal Life

Mira Sorvino was romantically linked to director Quentin Tarantino from 1996 to 1998. She later married actor Christopher Backus in 2004, and they have four children together. Sorvino is a Christian and resides in Los Angeles. In 2017, she publicly spoke out about the sexual harassment she faced from producer Harvey Weinstein, claiming it negatively impacted her career. In a unique tribute to her role in "Mimic", a compound was named "mirasorvone" after her character, reflecting her influence in both film and science.
