MIYAVI

Early Life

Miyavi, born Takamasa Ishihara in Osaka, Japan, grew up in the Nishikujō district before moving to Kawanishi. He was raised in a multicultural household with a Japanese mother and a Korean father, whose family hailed from Jeju Island. As a child, he excelled academically and was passionate about football, even joining the junior team of Cerezo Osaka. However, a sports injury in junior high school shifted his focus to music. At fifteen, he picked up the guitar, inspired by artists like Ray Charles and visual kei bands such as X Japan and Luna Sea. He formed his first band, Loop, during his third year of junior high.

Career

Miyavi's professional journey began in 1999 when he joined the visual kei band Dué le Quartz, adopting the stage name "Miyabi." He contributed as a guitarist, lyricist, and composer until the band disbanded in 2002. Transitioning to a solo career, he rebranded as Miyavi and released his debut album, "Gagaku," in 2003. His unique finger-slapping guitar style and energetic performances quickly garnered attention. Over the years, he released numerous albums, including "Galyuu" and "Holy Nights," and expanded his reach internationally, touring in countries like Korea and Taiwan. His film appearances, including a role in "Oresama," further showcased his versatility as an artist.

Personal Life

Miyavi married Japanese-American singer Melody on March 14, 2009, and they have three children together. The family lived in Los Angeles from 2014 to 2021, during which time Miyavi's film "Unbroken" was released. After welcoming their son Skyler, they returned to Tokyo, and later moved to Seoul in 2025. As a father, Miyavi has adjusted his on-stage persona, opting for a more toned-down style while continuing to inspire fans with his music and performances.
