Moya Brennan

Early Life

Moya Brennan, born Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin on August 4, 1952, in Dublin, Ireland, was the eldest of nine children in a musical family. Her parents, Leo Brennan and Maire (née Ní Dhugain), eloped from County Donegal to marry in County Louth. Growing up in the Gaeltacht area of Gweedore, County Donegal, Moya was immersed in Irish culture and music from a young age, with her mother as a music teacher and her father performing in a cabaret band. Moya and her siblings often sang in their family pub, Leo's Tavern, which became a local hub for live music.

Career

Moya began her professional music career in 1970 when her family formed the band Clannad. She released her first solo album, "Máire," in 1992, followed by several successful albums, including "Misty Eyed Adventures" and "Perfect Time." Her collaboration with Chicane on the single "Saltwater" in 1999 marked a significant milestone, reaching the top ten in multiple countries. Moya's music, often classified as new age or Celtic, reflected her strong Christian beliefs and was influenced by her upbringing. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for her album "Whisper to the Wild Water" in 2001.

Personal Life and Legacy

Moya's personal life was marked by both triumphs and challenges. She married musician Pat Farrell in the 1980s, but the marriage ended after a miscarriage. In 1990, she married British photographer Tim Jarvis, with whom she had two children. Moya published her autobiography, "The Other Side of the Rainbow," in 2000, detailing her life experiences, including struggles with addiction and her journey to faith. Diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2016, she continued to engage with the public until her passing on April 13, 2026. Moya Brennan is remembered as a pioneering figure in contemporary Celtic music, credited with bringing traditional Irish music to a global audience, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Dublin City University for her contributions to music.
