Nathan Lane

Early Life

Nathan Lane, born Joseph Lane on February 3, 1956, in Jersey City, New Jersey, grew up in a Catholic family with Irish immigrant roots. His father, Daniel, was a truck driver and aspiring tenor who passed away when Nathan was just 11 years old, while his mother, Nora, battled bipolar disorder until her death in 2000. Lane attended Catholic schools, including St. Peter's Preparatory School, where he was recognized as Best Actor in 1974.

Career

Lane's journey in the performing arts began after he changed his name to Nathan, inspired by a character from the musical "Guys and Dolls." He moved to New York City in 1975, where he initially found success in stand-up comedy before transitioning to off-Broadway productions. His Broadway debut came in 1982 with a revival of Noël Coward's "Present Laughter," and he quickly became a prominent figure in theater, winning three Tony Awards for his performances in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "The Producers," and "Angels in America." Lane has also made a mark in film and television, earning accolades including Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

Personal Life

Lane publicly came out as gay in 1999 and has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, receiving several awards for his activism. He married his long-time partner, theater producer Devlin Elliott, in 2015. Known for his sharp wit, Lane has also been vocal about his political views, supporting Democratic candidates and causes throughout his career. His contributions to the arts and advocacy have solidified his legacy as one of the greatest stage entertainers of his time, as noted by The New York Times in 2010.
