Neu!

Formation

Neu! was formed in 1971 in Düsseldorf, Germany, by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, both of whom were previously members of the pioneering electronic band Kraftwerk. Following their departure from Kraftwerk, they sought to create a new sound that would define the emerging krautrock genre. The name "Neu!" translates to "new!" in German, reflecting their innovative approach to music. They collaborated with producer Conny Plank, who played a crucial role in shaping their sound and is often regarded as a hidden member of the band.

Key Releases and Breakup

During their initial run from 1971 to 1975, Neu! released three influential albums: "Neu!" (1972), "Neu! 2" (1973), and "Neu! '75" (1975). These albums showcased their unique style characterized by minimalist melodies and the pioneering "motorik" beat, a driving rhythm that would influence countless artists across various genres. Despite their groundbreaking work, Neu! disbanded in 1975, with both Dinger and Rother pursuing solo projects.

Reunion and Legacy

In the mid-1980s, Neu! briefly reunited, releasing new material and performing together again. Their music has left a lasting impact on numerous artists, including David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Joy Division, who have cited Neu! as a significant influence on their own work. The band's innovative sound and rhythmic experimentation have made them a cornerstone of the krautrock genre, with their albums regarded as landmarks of German experimental rock. Neu!'s legacy continues to resonate, inspiring new generations of musicians and listeners alike.
