Neutral Milk Hotel

Formation

Neutral Milk Hotel was formed in 1989 by Jeff Mangum in Ruston, Louisiana, initially as a home recording project under the name Milk. Early recordings were shared among friends, including Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, and Will Cullen Hart, who later became part of the Elephant 6 collective. After discovering another band named Milk, Mangum changed the name to Neutral Milk Hotel, a title suggested by Hart that reflects a Dadaist influence.

Key Releases and Breakup

The band released their debut album, "On Avery Island," in 1996, which showcased a blend of lo-fi indie rock and psychedelic folk. Their sophomore album, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," released in 1998, became a cult classic, celebrated for its surreal lyrics and experimental sound. Despite their growing popularity, Neutral Milk Hotel disbanded later that year, with Mangum stepping away from the music scene.

Reunion and Legacy

After a long hiatus, the band reunited for a series of performances from 2013 to 2015, reigniting interest in their music. Neutral Milk Hotel's influence on indie rock is profound, with "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" often cited as one of the greatest albums of the 1990s. The band's unique sound, characterized by unconventional instruments and poignant lyrics, continues to resonate with new generations of listeners, solidifying their status as a seminal band in the indie music landscape.
