Early Life

Norman Quentin Cook, known professionally as Fatboy Slim, was born on July 31, 1963, in Bromley, Kent, England. The youngest of three children, he was raised in a family with a unique background; his mother was a teacher in a hospital school, and his father was an environmentalist consultant recognized for introducing bottle banks to the UK. Growing up in Reigate, Surrey, Cook described his childhood environment as a "suburban hell". He attended Reigate Grammar School, where he developed a passion for punk music and began DJing at the age of 15. After a brief stint in a punk band, he moved to Brighton to study at Brighton Polytechnic, where he honed his DJ skills and graduated with a degree in British studies.

Career

Cook's music career began in earnest when he joined the Housemartins in 1985, where he quickly learned to play the bass guitar. The band achieved significant success, reaching number one on the UK singles chart with their cover of "Caravan of Love". However, Cook's true passion lay in dance music, which he began exploring while still with the Housemartins. After the band's breakup in 1988, he formed several projects, including Beats International and Freak Power, before adopting the moniker Fatboy Slim. He became a pioneer of the big beat genre in the 1990s, known for his eclectic sampling and catchy hooks, with albums like "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" solidifying his status in the music industry.
