Olivia Dean

Early Life and Education

Olivia Lauryn Dean was born on March 14, 1999, in the London Borough of Haringey. Growing up in a predominantly white suburb, she often felt like an outsider due to her mixed-race heritage. Her father, an Englishman, and her mother Christine, a barrister of Jamaican and Guyanese descent, introduced her to a rich tapestry of music, from Carole King to Jill Scott. Dean's passion for singing ignited at a young age, and by eight, she was determined to pursue a career in music. Her early experiences included singing in competitions and participating in a gospel choir, which helped her overcome her shyness.

Career Beginnings

Dean's musical journey took off at 16 when she began writing songs and teaching herself guitar and piano. By 17, she was performing on the streets of London, which led to her first significant break as a backing vocalist for Rudimental. Her debut single, "Reason to Stay," was released in October 2018, followed by her first EP, "OK Love You Bye," in November 2019. Dean's music, characterized by heartfelt ballads and empowering anthems, has drawn comparisons to legends like Amy Winehouse and Aretha Franklin. Her artistry reflects a blend of pop soul, neo-soul, and hip-hop soul, showcasing her diverse influences.

Personal Life and Advocacy

In addition to her music career, Dean is a brand ambassador for Chanel and Burberry. She is also a passionate feminist, advocating for social change and immigrant rights, inspired by her grandmother's legacy as a Windrush generation immigrant. Dean's personal life includes a relationship with American drummer Eddie Burns, and she remains a dedicated supporter of West Ham United F.C. Her commitment to her roots and community is evident in her work and public statements, making her a prominent voice in contemporary music.
