Formation

Opeth was formed in April 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden, by David Isberg and a group of friends. Initially a death metal band, they took their name from the fictional city of Opet in Wilbur Smith's novel "The Sunbird." The lineup saw significant changes early on, with Isberg as the lead vocalist and Mikael Åkerfeldt joining as a bassist. After some internal conflicts, Åkerfeldt became the primary songwriter and vocalist, leading the band through various lineup changes, including the addition of drummer Anders Nordin and guitarist Kim Pettersson.

Musical Evolution

Throughout the 1990s, Opeth released several critically acclaimed albums, starting with their debut "Orchid" in 1995, followed by "Morningrise" and "My Arms, Your Hearse." Their sound evolved to incorporate elements of progressive rock, folk, and jazz, alongside their death metal roots. Albums like "Blackwater Park" and "Deliverance" solidified their reputation in the metal scene, showcasing their unique blend of genres and complex compositions.
