Early Life

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé, was born on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He grew up in poverty in Bauru, São Paulo, where he was the son of a footballer, Dondinho, and Celeste Arantes. Pelé's early life was marked by hardship, as he often played football with makeshift balls made from grapefruits or socks stuffed with newspaper. His passion for the sport was nurtured by his father, and he played for several amateur teams during his youth, eventually leading Bauru Atlético Clube juniors to two state championships.

Career

Pelé's professional career began when he joined Santos FC in 1956 at the age of 15, quickly establishing himself as a football prodigy. He made his senior debut on September 7, 1956, and became the top scorer in the Campeonato Paulista by the age of 16. His remarkable talent led him to international fame, culminating in his participation in the 1958 FIFA World Cup, where he became the youngest goalscorer in the tournament's history. Pelé's career was characterized by numerous records, including a Guinness World Record for scoring 1,279 goals in 1,363 games. He was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999 and received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the FIFA Player of the Century award.
