Carole Penelope "Penny" Marshall was born on October 15, 1943, in Manhattan, New York City. She was the daughter of Marjorie Irene, a tap dance teacher, and Anthony W. Marshall, a director of industrial films. Growing up in the Bronx, Penny was surrounded by creativity, with her brother Garry Marshall becoming a notable actor and director. She began her career as a tap dancer at the tender age of three, eventually teaching at her mother's dance school. Penny's diverse heritage included Italian, German, English, Irish, and Scottish roots, and her upbringing was marked by a unique religious background, with her family attending various churches for performance space.
