Early Life

Pierino Ronald "Perry" Como was born on May 18, 1912, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a modest household, where his father worked as a barber. Como's early exposure to music came from singing at local gatherings, and he eventually took a leap of faith by leaving his barbering job to pursue a career in music. In 1933, he married his girlfriend Roselle Belline, and they would go on to have three children together: Ronnie, David, and Terri.

Career

Como's professional journey began in 1932 when he joined Freddy Carlone's orchestra after a chance performance at a Cleveland ballroom. His smooth voice and charming personality quickly garnered attention, leading to a successful career in music. In 1943, he signed a contract with 20th Century-Fox, appearing in several films, although he found his true calling in television. Como's television career took off with the Chesterfield Supper Club, which began as a radio show and transitioned to television in 1948. He became a household name with his relaxed style and engaging performances, hosting shows that showcased his musical talents.

Como's discography includes numerous albums, such as "Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Music" and "A Sentimental Date With Perry," solidifying his status as a pop music icon. Over his career, he received multiple accolades, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life

Despite his fame, Como valued his privacy and kept his personal life separate from his public persona. He and Roselle celebrated their silver wedding anniversary with a memorable trip to Italy, where they had an audience with Pope Pius XII. Como's dedication to family and faith remained central to his life until his passing on May 12, 2001, leaving behind a legacy as one of America's beloved entertainers.
