Peter Lorre

Early Life

Peter Lorre, born László Löwenstein on June 26, 1904, in Rózsahegy, Hungary, was the first child of German-speaking Jewish parents, Elvira and Alajos Löwenstein. After the death of his mother when he was just four years old, Lorre's father remarried, but the relationship with his stepmother was strained, impacting Lorre's childhood. Anticipating conscription during the Second Balkan War, the family moved to Vienna, where Lorre's father served in the military during World War I.

Career

Lorre's acting career began at the age of 17 in Vienna, where he worked with puppeteer Richard Teschner. He later moved to Berlin, gaining fame for his role as the child-killer Hans Beckert in Fritz Lang's film "M" (1931). This performance solidified his reputation as a talented actor, leading to further roles in films such as "F.P.1 antwortet nicht" (1932). With the rise of the Nazis, Lorre fled to Paris and then London, where he caught the attention of Alfred Hitchcock, who cast him in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934). Lorre's unique appearance and voice often led him to be typecast as sinister characters, a trend that continued throughout his career.

Personal Life

Lorre was married three times, first to Celia Lovsky, then to Kaaren Verne, and finally to Anne Marie Brenning, with whom he had a daughter, Catharine. His family life was marked by challenges, including his daughter's brush with danger when she was nearly abducted by serial killers. Lorre struggled with health issues, including addiction to morphine, which he battled during the filming of the Mr. Moto series. He passed away from a stroke on March 23, 1964, in Los Angeles, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering actor known for his memorable performances and distinctive style.
