Formation

Peter, Paul and Mary, an iconic American folk music group, was formed in 1961 in New York City during the folk music revival. The trio consisted of Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers, brought together by manager Albert Grossman after auditions in the vibrant New York folk scene. Breakthrough

Their debut album, "Peter, Paul and Mary," released in 1962 by Warner Bros. Records, featured hits such as "Lemon Tree" and "500 Miles," and included popular songs like "If I Had a Hammer" and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" This album spent ten months on the Billboard Top Ten, including seven weeks at No. 1, and achieved double platinum status, selling over two million copies. The group continued to release successful albums throughout the 1960s, including the beloved "Puff, the Magic Dragon" in 1963, which became a signature song despite misconceptions about its meaning.

Legacy

Peter, Paul and Mary disbanded in 2009, leaving behind a rich legacy of folk music that influenced generations.
