Peter Weiss

Early Life

Peter Ulrich Weiss was born on November 8, 1916, in Nowawes, near Berlin, Germany. His family moved to Bremen when he was three, and later to Berlin, where he began his artistic training as a painter. In 1935, Weiss emigrated to England with his family, where he studied photography. The following years saw him moving to Czechoslovakia and then to Sweden after the German occupation of the Czech Sudetenland in 1938. He became a Swedish citizen in 1946, marking the beginning of his long and fruitful career in the arts.

Career

Weiss was a multifaceted artist known for his contributions as a writer, painter, graphic artist, and experimental filmmaker. He gained prominence for his plays, particularly "Marat/Sade" and "The Investigation," as well as his influential novel "The Aesthetics of Resistance," which is regarded as one of the most significant German-language works of the 1970s and 1980s. Throughout his career, Weiss received numerous accolades, including the Georg Büchner Prize and the Heinrich Mann Prize, reflecting his impact on the literary and artistic landscape.

Personal Life

Peter Weiss was married three times, first to painter Helga Henschen, then to Carlota Dethorey, and finally to artist Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss, with whom he spent the latter part of his life. Weiss faced health challenges, suffering a heart attack in 1970, and he ultimately passed away in Stockholm in 1982 at the age of 65. His legacy continues to influence contemporary art and literature, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in the cultural history of Germany and Sweden.
