Early Life

Phil Anselmo was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has a rich heritage that includes Italian, French, and Danish roots. He attended various schools across Louisiana and Texas, ultimately dropping out of Grace King High School in Metairie during his senior year. Anselmo's childhood was marked by a mischievous streak, famously causing a fire in his parents' home while attempting a prank. He also worked on a shrimp boat with his stepfather during his teenage years, showcasing his diverse early experiences.

Career

Anselmo's musical journey began in 1981 when he co-formed his first band, Samhain. He later joined Vapid Phaze, which transformed into Razor White, but his true breakthrough came in 1986 when he became the lead singer of Pantera. Under his influence, Pantera shifted from glam metal to a heavier sound, releasing their pivotal album "Power Metal" in 1988. Anselmo's powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence helped propel the band to international fame, making them icons in the groove and heavy metal genres. He also formed other notable projects, including the supergroup Down and hardcore band Superjoint, and established Housecore Records, further solidifying his impact on the music scene.

Personal Life and Interests

Anselmo married Stephanie Opal Weinstein on Halloween in 2001, and together they created an acoustic duo called Southern Isolation. As of 2011, he resides in rural Louisiana with his partner Kate Richardson, who assists with his record label. Anselmo is an avid horror film enthusiast, owning a vast collection and previously co-founding a Halloween attraction called House of Shock, which raised funds for local charities. Additionally, he has a passion for boxing, having written articles on the sport and even taking a boxing trainer on tour. Anselmo's diverse interests reflect his multifaceted personality beyond music.
