Early Life

Phoebe Belle Cates Kline was born on July 16, 1963, in New York City, into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry. Her father, Joseph Cates, was a prominent Broadway producer and a pioneering figure in television, while her mother, Lily, was of Chinese-Filipino descent. Cates grew up surrounded by the arts, attending the Professional Children's School and later the Juilliard School. Although she aspired to be a dancer, a knee injury at age 14 shifted her focus towards modeling and acting.

Career

Cates began her career at the young age of ten, modeling for magazines like Seventeen, where she graced the cover four times. However, her dissatisfaction with the modeling industry led her to pursue acting. She made her film debut in "Paradise" (1982), where she not only acted but also sang the film's theme song. Despite the film's controversial nature, Cates's performance marked a significant milestone in her career. She went on to star in iconic films such as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982) and "Gremlins" (1984), solidifying her status as a beloved actress of the 1980s.

Personal Life

In the early 1980s, Cates shared an apartment in Greenwich Village with her boyfriend Stavros Merjos, whom she met at Studio 54. She later fell in love with actor Kevin Kline, whom she married on March 5, 1989. The couple has two children, Owen and Greta, both of whom have pursued careers in the arts. Cates has since transitioned into entrepreneurship, founding the Blue Tree boutique in 2005, while also enjoying a quieter life away from the Hollywood spotlight.
