Pietro Antonio Domenico Trapassi, better known as Pietro Metastasio, was born on January 3, 1698, in Rome, Italy. He was the younger son of Felice Trapassi, a grocer and a member of the Corsican regiment of the papal forces, and Francesca Galasti. From a young age, Metastasio showcased his poetic talent, captivating audiences with impromptu verses. His remarkable abilities caught the attention of Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina, a prominent legal and literary figure, who became his mentor and adopted him. Gravina, who renamed him Metastasio, aimed to mold him into a jurist while also nurturing his literary gifts.
