Early Life

Park Jae-sang, better known as Psy, was born on December 31, 1977, in the affluent Gangnam District of Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in a wealthy family; his mother, Kim Young-hee, owned several restaurants, while his father, Park Won-Ho, was the executive chairman of a manufacturing company. Despite his privileged upbringing, Psy was known as the class clown during his school years, attending Banpo Elementary and Middle Schools and Sehwa High School. His passion for music ignited at the age of 15 when he was introduced to foreign pop music through a Korean TV show, particularly inspired by Queen's iconic 1986 concert at Wembley Stadium.

Career

Psy's musical journey began in the late 1990s after he dropped out of Boston University, where he had initially planned to study business administration. Instead, he pursued music at Berklee College of Music but left before completing his degree. His big break came in 2000 when he made his television debut in South Korea, showcasing his unique dance style. In 2001, he released his first full-length album, "Psy from the Psycho World!", which garnered attention but also controversy due to its explicit content. Psy's career skyrocketed with the release of "Gangnam Style" in 2012, which became a global phenomenon, breaking numerous records and earning him multiple awards, including a Diamond Play Button from YouTube.

Personal Life

Psy's personal life has had its ups and downs. In 2001, he faced legal troubles due to marijuana possession, which led to a brief jail sentence. He later married Yoo Hye-yeon in 2006, and the couple has twin daughters. Despite his success, Psy has openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism. In 2012, he earned over $40 million, primarily from "Gangnam Style", and in 2022, he returned to South Korea to establish his own record label, P Nation, further solidifying his influence in the music industry.

Psy is often credited with playing a pivotal role in the Korean Wave, transforming global perceptions of K-pop and paving the way for future artists.
