Early Life

Birju Maharaj, born Brijmohan Nath Mishra on February 4, 1938, in Handia, Allahabad, was immersed in the world of dance from a young age. He hailed from a distinguished lineage of Kathak dancers, with his father, Jagannath Maharaj (Acchan Maharaj), being a prominent exponent of the Lucknow gharana. Maharaj began his dance training at just four years old, guided by his father and uncles, Lachhu and Shambhu Maharaj. His early performances started at his father's concerts, and by the age of seven, he was performing solo in West Bengal. Tragically, he lost his father at the age of nine, but his passion for dance only grew stronger.

Career

Maharaj's professional journey began at the tender age of fourteen when he started teaching dance at Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi. He later became a pivotal figure at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Kathak Kendra, where he served as Head of Faculty and director until his retirement in 1998. His performances were renowned for blending traditional Kathak with contemporary themes, often addressing social issues through dance. He was also a skilled vocalist and percussionist, known for his ability to sing thumris while dancing. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable artists like tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and choreographed for films such as "Dil To Pagal Hai" and "Devdas."

Personal Life

In 1956, Maharaj married Annapurna Devi, the daughter of a respected guru, and together they had five children. His wife passed away in 2008, and in his later years, Maharaj faced health challenges, including kidney disease and diabetes. He passed away from a heart attack on January 16, 2022, at the age of 83, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Indian classical dance.

Legacy

Birju Maharaj's contributions to Kathak and Hindustani classical music earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. His influence continues through his students and the dance school he founded, Kalashram, which remains a beacon of Kathak training in Delhi. His innovative choreography and dedication to the art form have solidified his status as a legendary figure in Indian dance.
