His mother, Sona, was one of the first graduates of the Baku-based school of the Russian Music Society, which likely influenced his early musical inclinations. At just eight years old, Garayev began his formal music education at the junior music school of the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire. By 1933, his exceptional talent allowed him to enroll in two faculties simultaneously, studying under notable composers such as Georgi Sharoyev and Uzeyir Hajibeyov. He became a member of the Union of Composers of Azerbaijan SSR in 1937.
Career
Garayev's career took off in 1938 when he composed his first cantata, "The Song of the Heart," which was performed at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in the presence of Joseph Stalin. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of his prominence in Soviet music. He later returned to Baku to teach at the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society and co-created the opera "Motherland" in 1945, earning a Stalin Prize. Throughout his career, Garayev composed nearly 110 musical pieces, including ballets, operas, and symphonic works, and became a significant figure in promoting Azerbaijani folk music while also embracing contemporary genres like jazz.
Later Life and Legacy
Despite suffering from heart disease in his later years, Garayev remained deeply connected to his roots in Baku, expressing his love for the city through his writings. He passed away on May 13, 1982, in Moscow, and was laid to rest in Baku's Alley of Honor. His contributions to music were recognized with numerous awards, including the Hero of Socialist Labour and multiple Orders of Lenin, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in Azerbaijani and Soviet music history.
