Formation

Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) is an American rock band formed in 1996 in Seattle by vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme. Following the breakup of his previous band Kyuss, Homme initially joined Screaming Trees as a touring guitarist before creating a new band called Gamma Ray. Due to a name conflict with a German power metal band, they rebranded as Queens of the Stone Age, a name inspired by a nickname given to Kyuss by their producer Chris Goss. The band’s first release was the song "18 A.D." on a compilation album, marking the beginning of their journey.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

Throughout its history, QOTSA has seen numerous lineup changes, with Homme being the only constant member. The band’s early years featured members like Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan, contributing to their distinctive sound. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1998, followed by the critically acclaimed "Rated R" in 2000, which showcased a wider variety of instruments and vocal contributions. The 2002 album "Songs for the Deaf" further solidified their reputation, featuring multiple lead vocalists and a diverse range of instrumentation. Subsequent albums, including "Lullabies to Paralyze" and "...Like Clockwork," continued to evolve their sound, blending elements of alternative rock, stoner rock, and hard rock.
