Formation

Röyksopp is a Norwegian electronic music duo formed in 1998 in Tromsø, Norway, by childhood friends Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland. Their musical journey began in the early 1990s when they were introduced through a mutual friend and bonded over their shared interests in films, music, and electronics. They initially experimented with various forms of electronic music, becoming part of the Tromsø techno scene before reuniting in Bergen, which had become the epicenter of Norway's underground electronic music scene.

Breakthrough

The duo gained significant recognition with their debut album, "Melody A.M.," released in 2001 on the Wall of Sound label. This album solidified their place in the electronica genre and featured hit tracks like "Eple" and "So Easy." Over the years, Röyksopp continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including "The Understanding," "Junior," and "Senior," showcasing their unique sound that blends elements of house, synth-pop, and ambient music. They are known for their use of multiple lead vocalists, collaborating with artists such as Robyn and Erlend Øye.

Legacy

Röyksopp has received numerous accolades, including multiple Spellemann Awards and recognition from Pitchfork Media, which ranked their tracks among the top of the decade. Their innovative approach to electronic music and their preference for analogue synthesizers have influenced many artists in the genre.
